Social Marketing Initiatives
MySkyStatus: Lufthansa’s Social Marketing Takes Flight

Lufthansa has taken social marketing to a whole new level with its groundbreaking program, MySkyStatus. Hot on the heels of its successful U.S. Twitter launch, the new initiative is a web-based application that will send automated tweets and Facebook updates on flight status to users’ respective profiles.

Lufthansa launched its U.S. Twitter account on Sept. 30. The account allows followers to stay in the know with information on news, exclusive promotions and other company information. Lufthansa had more than 2,200 followers in its first week on Twitter. Follow Lufthansa here.

MySkyStatus operates by taking users’ flight information, lining it up with Lufthansa’s feed of airline traffic and releasing automated updates based on user preferences. The tool and its real-time communications are adaptable to each user. Users can choose to update about only departures or arrivals, or they can send hourly updates based on the aircraft’s position in the air. MySkyStatus can track 99 percent of all flights, allowing travelers of all airlines to keep their social networks updated from anywhere around the world. Business travelers will especially appreciate the application as they can now ditch the out-of-office emails in favor of real-time social networking updates.
